- Doctors in Moscow restored the 103-year-old patient's ability to walk after a fracture
At the Yeramishantsev City Clinical Hospital in Moscow, doctors replaced the hip joint of a 103-year-old patient in order to restore her ability to walk. This was announced on Thursday, September 4, by the Moscow Department of Health.
A woman was admitted to the hospital after a fall, as a result of which she broke her hip, writes RT. She underwent an operation to install an endoprosthesis, which allowed her to fully restore joint function.
Vahagn Papoyan, head of the traumatology and orthopaedic department, noted that the case was special: with age, bones become more fragile due to the predominance of destruction processes over the formation of new tissue, Moscow 24 notes. Therefore, doctors paid special attention to fixing the prosthesis so that it would hold securely and allow the patient to maintain mobility.
The very next day after the operation, the woman was able to move, and four days later she was discharged with recommendations for rehabilitation, which in a few months will allow her to walk without support, the Moscow city News agency reports.
