The US Department of Defense has authorized the use of the Great Lakes Naval Base near Chicago for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. This was reported on September 4 by The Washington Post (WP).

According to officials, the base could also be used to house the National Guard or active troops if U.S. President Donald Trump decides to intervene militarily.

"DHS is targeting the worst of the worst illegal criminals, including murderers, rapists, gang members, pedophiles, and terrorists across the country," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

The governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, criticized the plans of the White House.

"I refuse to pretend that the extreme brutality that we are witnessing with Trump's execution and his administration's policies is normal or justified," he said.

Earlier, on September 3, Trump announced his intention to deploy the country's National Guard to Baltimore, Maryland. He noted that this method is necessary to combat the high crime rate. He submitted an accompanying statement on federal intervention in Chicago.
