- A special national holiday on September 6 is Eutychius the Quiet: history, traditions, omens
Every year on September 6, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the Holy Martyr Eutychius, a disciple of the Apostles John the Theologian and Paul. In the national calendar, the holiday is called Eutychius the Quiet. In 2025, it falls on a Friday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.
What is the church holiday on September 6th?
The Holy Martyr Eutychius was born in the city of Sebaste, in the territory of historical Palestine. The time of his life fell on the I–II centuries of our era — the period of the formation of the Church. According to legend, he first heard a sermon about Christ in his youth, after which he became a disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian.
Later, he joined the Apostle Paul, with whom he shared his missionary work, traveling to different countries and establishing the foundations of the new faith in the hearts of people. For his zeal in the work of evangelical ministry, the saint was appointed bishop.
Eutychius' life was marked by severe trials. During the persecution of Christians, he was tortured, but no amount of torment could break his faith. One of the episodes preserved in church traditions tells how a lion released on him suddenly spoke in a human voice, praising God. This incident horrified the executioners and became a sign of God's power.
The holy martyr completed his earthly journey in his native Sebaste — at the beginning of the II century he was executed by pagans. Despite the fact that Eutyches was not included among the 70 apostles, he is revered on an equal basis with them in terms of the significance of his work and spiritual authority. After his death, he was recognized as a holy martyr.
Traditions of the national holiday Eutychius the Quiet, celebrated on September 6
In folk tradition, the saint's memorial day is known as Eutychius the Quiet — a time of peace, silence and deep inner contemplation. The beginning of autumn in Russia was often accompanied by windless, calm dawns, which were perceived as a good sign.
The ancestors tried to spend the holiday with their family, avoided noisy meetings, and devoted time to communicating with loved ones. We started the morning with a prayer service. In the temples, they asked Saint Eutychius for help in family matters, healing diseases and strengthening marital relations.
On this day, it was customary to do household chores related to care and comfort. The women gathered for gatherings, did needlework, and sang songs. In the evening, they always had a modest family dinner, preferring simple food that emphasized the atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Special importance was attached to the dreams seen on the night of September 6. They were considered prophetic. The ancestors believed that through dreams you can get an important clue or warning about future events.
