Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934 in the city of Piacenza in northern Italy in a large family. His father was a businessman, and his mother was a housewife. Besides Giorgio, two other children grew up in the family.: his older brother Sergio and younger sister Rosanna. Another sister, Silvana, died shortly before the fashion designer was born. Armani's parents loved the theater and sometimes took their children there, which later influenced his work.

In 1949, the family moved to Milan. There, Giorgio studied at the Leonardo da Vinci School and became interested in medicine, dreaming of becoming a doctor. Later, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at the prestigious University of Bologna. However, he studied for only a couple of years, realizing that this field of activity is not what he would like to devote his life to.

After leaving university, Giorgio served in the army and returned to his old hobby of photography. He persevered in improving his skills, bringing them closer to the masterpieces of photography. The talented young man was noticed and offered a job as a window decorator in the La Rinescente department store, the largest in Italy. So, in 1957, Armani got his first job.

Later, trusting his taste, the young man was allowed to make a purchase plan. Soon, design and fashion completely absorbed the designer, motivating him to create his own sketches of clothes. But the release of the first collection was still a long way off. Prior to that, Armani had worked as an assistant for the famous Italian designer Nino Cerutti, which finally determined his choice.

Armani presented the collection under his own name for the first time in 1974. It included classic men's suits in brown, gray and black colors. A year later, he opened the Giorgio Armani fashion house in Milan. Success came instantly, and the brand began to expand. Four years later, the designer created the first branch in the USA, and in the 1990s he launched the sale of products via the Internet.

The fashion designer became known all over the world. The Armani style, characterized by elegance and refined simplicity, has been loved by many celebrities and royalty. Among them are the actresses Sophia Loren, Meryl Streep, Michelle Pfeiffer, Monica Bellucci and Princess Charlene of Monaco. Couture outfits are also worn by the heroes of popular Hollywood films and famous athletes.

In addition to clothing, bags, watches, jewelry, shoes and perfumes are released under the name of Armani. In 2010, the fashion designer opened his first hotel in Dubai, the Armani Hotel Dubai. This is how the Armani Hotels & Resorts group was born, which soon expanded to another hotel in the heart of Milan.

In the last years of Giorgio Armani's life, his fortune was estimated at $13 billion, making him one of the richest people in Italy. Meanwhile, couturier spent a lot of money on charity. In particular, he provided assistance to Afghan refugees and was declared a goodwill ambassador of the UN Refugee Committee.

During his long career, Armani has been awarded numerous awards and titles in both the fashion and government worlds. He is a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and a Knight of the Legion of Honor, France's highest national award. Two years before his death, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Piacenza.

Armani's personal life has always been hidden from the public eye. There is no information in open sources about whether he was married or has children. But one thing is known, that the love of his life was work — brand development and the embodiment of his ideas in the fashion world. Even in his old age, couturier continued to create, despite his age and health problems.

The fashion designer passed away on September 4, 2025 at the age of 91. The cause of death was pneumonia, which he suffered earlier in June. He left peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, leaving an unforgettable legacy in the fashion world. The farewell ceremony for the Italian fashion designer will be held in Milan on September 6 and 7.
