Dodik announced the possibility of declaring the independence of Republika Srpska
Republika Srpska (RS), an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), may declare independence in the event of increased external pressure on it. This was announced on September 4 by RS President Milorad Dodik in his Twitter account (ex. Twitter).
"You, from Brussels, behave like a European. We can talk. Any new imposition will lead us to a decision on the independence of Republika Srpska, and we are determined to do this," Dodik wrote.
In addition, he held a meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, at which he stated that the Republic of Moldova was ready to fight for its rights by political means. Later, he also posted a post thanking Hungary for its attention.
"Today in Budapest, I held talks with my friend Peter Szijjarto about cooperation between Republika Srpska and Hungary. Our ties are becoming stronger, from economics to culture, based on shared values and worldviews. <...> Our friendship with Hungary is invaluable: together we prove that even in difficult times the voice of common sense can be heard, and that a people who knows who they are and what they are fighting for will never tolerate defeats," Dodik said.
On February 26, the BiH court sentenced Dodik in absentia to a year in prison in the case of non-compliance with the decisions of the UN High Representative in BiH, Christian Schmidt. He was banned from political activity for six years.
On August 6, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina annulled Dodik's mandate and also decided to hold early elections.
On August 28, it became known that the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina had scheduled early presidential elections for Republika Srpska on November 23. On the same day, Dodik announced that he and members of his ruling Union of Independent Social Democrats party would not participate in the elections.
