Russia's priority is to develop its own potential in the field of shipbuilding and marine technologies. This was announced on September 4 by Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Alexander Poshivai during the session "Fleet of the XXI century: technological sovereignty or international cooperation?" within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum - 2025 (WEF-2025).

According to him, the actions in this area over the past two years have demonstrated that the flexibility of Russian ship and cargo owners is large enough to respond to sanctions packages.

"At the same time, we understand that Russia's priority is to develop its own potential in the field of shipbuilding and marine technologies. This applies to all types of production. Ideally, of course, we would really like to have fully equipped vessels... The changes were made in our country, but the previous focus on globalization, which was logical, understandable, and moving in all directions, was not fully completed," he said.

Petr Marchenko, a TV and radio presenter, journalist and moderator of the session, in turn, called shipbuilding the system that forms the industry and stressed that it is one of the key ones for the country.

Poshivai also pointed out a problem with engines for large-tonnage vessels. He noted that the possibility of replacing the diesel engine and electric propulsion is still being considered, but it is an emergency option. In this regard, the deputy head of the Ministry of Transport called technological sovereignty not only an opportunity to produce equipment in the Russian Federation, but also economic independence, job creation and the development of technological leadership, which has now received a serious incentive and motivation.

At the same time, he clarified that in the absence of technological leadership development, it will be difficult to talk about sovereignty. He also called full autonomy unlikely due to the large number of elements in shipbuilding. According to Poshivaya, the Russian side can make enclosures, but the creation of high-tech equipment is already becoming a problem that needs to be solved. In this regard, he stressed that it is currently impossible to do without international cooperation.

"International cooperation is, of course, interaction with friendly countries that work in different ways, but nevertheless, so to speak, permanently help solve these problems, for which we deeply thank them. At the same time, we understand that international cooperation increases the stability of the systems of both our, so to speak, consumers and foreign suppliers of this equipment, which I mentioned," added the Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation.

He stressed that against this background, a bilateral agreement between Russia and friendly countries is an absolute necessity that the country is currently addressing. At the same time, he pointed out the inevitability of a reasonable balance between technological sovereignty in the transport sector and international cooperation.

Earlier, on May 12, the Government of the Russian Federation updated the strategy for the development of the domestic shipbuilding industry until 2050. According to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the Cabinet of Ministers has significantly increased support for manufacturers and customers of ships and components. Over 500 billion rubles will be allocated for these purposes in the next six years.
