Russian scientists are developing technologies of augmented reality and biocompatible microelectrodes to create prosthetics. Veronika Skvortsova, head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), told Izvestia about this on September 4 on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum 2025 (WEF 2025).

The first, according to her, is the creation of biocompatible microelectrodes that have learned how to implant into the ends of peripheral nerve fibers, sensory and motor. Thanks to the development, specialists will be able to eliminate the phantom pains of patients in order to normalize the level of nerve impulse conduction.

The second technology involves the use of virtual and augmented environments, Skvortsova noted. We are talking about using the remains of limbs in order to properly strain different muscle groups at the same time, and subsequently use the prosthesis with great convenience.

"That is, in fact, a person in virtual reality sees his preserved limbs and learns to clap them or make some other movements. And after that, when the prosthesis is put on, it is easier for him to use the prosthesis for the same purposes," she concluded.

On August 13, it was reported that the first domestic knee module with a manual lock was developed at the Center for Innovations in Traumatology and Orthopedics (CITO) of Rostec State Corporation with the support of the Agency for Technological Development. The knee module will be installed on prosthetics that are designed for people who have lost a leg at hip level. The module is equipped with a simple mechanical control system and is able to withstand a load of up to 125 kg.
