Specialists from the Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT), which is the operator of the Unified Biometric System (UBS), are working on creating a service that could remotely sell Russian wine and energy drinks with age confirmation using biometrics. Vladislav Povolotsky, Director General of the Central Bank of Russia, told about this on September 4 on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum 2025 (WEF 2025).

"The corresponding pilot project is being worked out. CBT, together with its partners, is preparing to launch an age verification service for the purchase of tonic drinks, including online. For the remote sale of other categories of goods, for example, Russian wine, a similar technological solution can be used," TASS quoted him as saying.

He added that an appropriate regulatory framework is also needed to launch such a system.

The WTC is also working on the possibility of confirming age using biometrics in an offline format. In self-service checkout shops, you will need to confirm your age for any purchases of age-restricted items. In vending machines, such a process will be necessary only when selling energy drinks.

On September 3, the start of the WEF-2025 was announced. It will be attended by delegations from 70 countries. According to experts, the amount of contracts concluded on it can reach almost 6 trillion rubles.

On August 11, Rospotrebnadzor banned the sale of vapes and energy drinks under the same brand. The decision was made because such trade violates the norms of the law "On protecting the health of citizens from exposure to ambient tobacco smoke, the effects of tobacco consumption or consumption of nicotine-containing products."
