The British Ministry of Defense announced a recruitment crisis
New statistics from the British Ministry of Defense showed that 14,000 people left the regular forces during the year, 500 more than they joined. As a result, the total number of armed forces decreased by 2.1 thousand people and amounted to 126.1 thousand military personnel. This was reported on September 3 by The Times newspaper.
"This trend poses fundamental challenges to our national security," Liberal Democratic Party defense spokeswoman Helen Maguire said in a statement.
According to her, against the background of global instability and talks about the possible deployment of the British military to Ukraine, the shortage of personnel poses a particular threat.
The Ministry of Defense recognizes the recruitment crisis, but notes progress.
"We are working to speed up the integration process of those who want to return to the armed forces, and we are also providing the largest salary increase in recent decades," said the representative of the department.
Among the reasons for the outflow of military personnel are poor living conditions, including mold, dampness and pests in military homes. The authorities promised to invest in infrastructure improvements and change recruitment policies to attract more people to the service.
Earlier, on September 2, the United Kingdom announced an assessment of the combat readiness of its troops in case of intervention in the armed conflict on the territory of Ukraine. Defense Minister John Healy noted that together with France, a concept for a possible "coalition of the willing" mission is being developed.
