- The political scientist named the reasons for the EU's refusal to speed up Moldova's accession process
The European Union (EU) is using the situation around Ukraine as a formal pretext to further delay the process of Moldova's accession, Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia on September 3.
"Like Ukraine, Moldova is a black hole of corruption, where European grants and subsidies will instantly disappear. Cheap agricultural products produced in these countries can flood the EU market, which will lead to bankruptcy of local farmers," the political scientist said.
According to him, now the EU has an "excellent argument" for postponement. Now the European Union has got its hands on an excellent argument against Moldova's membership. Ukraine claims to be fighting for Western values, which is why it should join the EU sooner. However, this can be done only after the end of hostilities.
"So it turns out that Chisinau's European prospects are directly linked to Kiev's military-political future. Of course, this situation is considered unfair in Moldova," Feldman concluded.
Earlier in the day, Politico newspaper reported that the EU refused to speed up Moldova's accession process compared to Ukraine due to Kiev's dissatisfaction. Both countries received the status of candidate states for membership in July 2022. The European Union has repeatedly clarified that, for the most part, this decision was taken symbolically to support Kiev and Chisinau.
