Death toll due to earthquake in Afghanistan increased to 1,457

The death toll from the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has increased to 1,457. This was announced on September 3 by the deputy official representative of the government of the country, Hamdullah Fitrat.

"At the moment, the death toll has reached 1,457, and the number of injured is 3,394," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to Fitrat, approximately 6.7 thousand houses were destroyed as a result of the incident. He noted that search and rescue operations are continuing, and the victims extracted from the rubble are being airlifted to the nearest medical facilities.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan became known on September 1. According to the US Geological Survey, after the seismic event, five aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 5.2 were recorded in the country. At the same time, the country's authorities asked Russia to help eliminate the consequences of the earthquake. The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, announced work on the issue of sending urgent humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

Later, on September 2, the Associated Press reported on the continuation of the evacuation of victims. Some of the wounded are still under the rubble.
