- The head of Buryatia noted the importance of accessibility of Lake Baikal for all tourists
Baikal is an asset of Russia that should be accessible to everyone, and therefore it is important to create normal conditions for every tourist. This statement was made by the head of Buryatia, Alexei Tsydenov, commenting on September 3 on the words of businessman Oleg Deripaska about proposals to restrict tourists' access to Lake Baikal.
"Baikal is Russia's heritage. It should be accessible. The issue is about creating conditions. Tourists need to create normal conditions," Tsydenov said in an interview with RBC.
He explained that it is important to equip garbage collection sites, prepared parking lots for motorhomes or tent cities for visitors. According to him, it is also necessary "not to prohibit, but to provide" the guests of the region with everything they need for a civilized retreat that will not harm nature.
Earlier, on April 1, 2022, Deripaska drew attention to the deteriorating environmental situation on Lake Baikal. Then he noted that the causes of the disaster are, among other things, "wild" tourism. According to him, "the ball is ruled by wild barbarians" who leave garbage around the lake. To solve this problem, he proposed to ban the use of any single-use plastic and temporarily limit the tourist flow of "savages".
