The prospects for the restoration of sanctions of the Eurotroika (Great Britain, France and Germany) against Iran are quite high, Andrei Ontikov, an orientalist, publicist, and author of the Telegram channel Eastern Gate, told Izvestia.

"However, the UN Security Council resolutions were not implemented by either the United States or European countries. Iran has also reneged on its obligations in response to their steps, so the situation is very difficult," the political scientist is sure.

In his opinion, the situation around Iran should be considered more broadly than the discussions around its nuclear program.

"Iran cooperates very closely with both Russia and China in many areas. And, of course, breaking this chain would be a very attractive option for the United States and the Europeans, especially in the context of the ongoing crisis around Ukraine," the expert believes.

He added that Western countries would like to undermine internal stability in Iran and bring the situation to a change of power in the country.

"The nuclear program in this case is such a key to achieving these goals. The UN Security Council resolution presupposes the resumption of UN sanctions against Iran, and a certain mechanism is prescribed there, and the Eurotroika is currently operating through this mechanism. The problem with this mechanism is that the right of veto, which Russia and China could use, does not apply in this case," the expert explained.

On August 28, the Eurotroika countries notified Iran of the launch of a 30-day process to restore UN sanctions against Tehran in connection with its nuclear program.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, Abbas Araqchi, noted that the path chosen by these states "will have serious consequences for the authority and structure of the UN Security Council." The diplomat also added that Tehran will respond appropriately to the decision of the Eurotroika. According to him, Iran is ready to defend its rights and interests.

On August 26, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced that the Islamic Republic and the Eurotroika countries had held another round of negotiations on the nuclear issue in Geneva. He added that Tehran continues to insist on finding a mutually beneficial diplomatic solution. Gharibabadi also noted that it is time for European countries to make the right decision and resolve the nuclear issue with Iran through diplomacy.
