On September 2, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on Finnish President Alexander Stubb to "turn bayonets" against the Nazis in Ukraine after he said that the Finnish side had defeated the USSR in 1944.

"If 1944 does not let Stubb go, we recommend that his country (to thank Stalin for his goodwill) turn bayonets against the Nazis, as it did that year — now the regime of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky," she wrote in a message on her Telegram channel.

According to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Stubb may also propose the 1944 victory algorithm to his allies in Brussels as a way to preserve Ukraine's independence so that "after 79 years, their great-grandchildren will have something to be proud of."

Stubb told The Economist newspaper on the same day that Finland won the war with the USSR in 1944 because it was able to maintain its independence. According to him, Ukraine is now in a better position than his country, as it has allies and support from outside.

Earlier in the day, Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy chairman of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, said that the Finnish leader's words may indicate a lack of knowledge of history or deliberate deception. He clarified that the country should not forget about its historical mistakes.
