Hypothyroidism — feelings of chilliness and intolerance to cold — is a consequence of a profound metabolic and energy metabolism disorder in the body due to a deficiency of thyroid hormones (T4 and T3). Oksana Pivovarova, Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, therapist, told Izvestia on September 3.

A decrease in basal metabolism occurs due to the fact that thyroid hormones are the main stimulators of metabolism in body cells. With a lack of them, the rate of metabolic processes drops sharply. Thermogenesis is disrupted in brown adipose tissue, which is responsible for producing heat without muscle tremors. The T3 hormone triggers the synthesis of the uncoupler protein UCP-1 in mitochondria, but this mechanism does not work in hypothyroidism.

"Due to the complex effects, including increased vasopressin levels, peripheral vessels are in a state of chronic spasm. This leads to constantly cold and pale skin, as well as deterioration of blood microcirculation in the extremities. Hypothyroidism also causes general weakness and fatigue, which reduces heat production due to muscle work and weakens the mechanism of cold shivering," the specialist said.

The symptoms are aggravated by related problems: anemia, which impairs oxygen delivery to tissues; hypoglycemia, which deprives cells of an energy source; and dry skin, which disrupts its insulating functions.

The main causes of hypothyroidism are autoimmune thyroiditis, removal of the gland, treatment with radioactive iodine, congenital disorders and diseases of the pituitary gland. Women aged 40-50 years, people with hereditary problems and other autoimmune diseases, as well as pregnant women are at risk.

On August 8, neurologist Galina Chudinskaya, in a conversation with Izvestia, explained the causes of voice problems with prolonged stress. According to her, the mechanism of the influence of anxiety and stress on the voice is associated with neurophysiological and vegetative reactions.
