An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred near the city of Jalalabad in Afghanistan. This was announced on September 2 by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
It is specified that the tremors were recorded at 12:29 UTC (15:29 Moscow time) 57 km northeast of the city of Jalalabad with a population of 200 thousand people. The source was located at a depth of 35 km.
On September 1, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred in Afghanistan, which was also reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, five aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 5.2 occurred in the same area of the country.
Later it became known that the death toll as a result of the natural disaster increased to 900 people, more than 3 thousand people were injured. Helicopters were sent to participate in rescue operations.
On the same day, the Afghan authorities asked Russia to help in the aftermath of the earthquake. In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow is considering sending urgent humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
