- Reuters has learned about Israel's mobilization of 40,000 reservists for the offensive on Gaza
Israel is mobilizing about 40,000 reservists to prepare for a new offensive on the Gaza Strip, despite warnings from the military command. This was reported on September 2 by the Reuters news agency.
Reservists began arriving for duty on Tuesday, September 2, to participate in the upcoming offensive on Gaza.
According to the agency, the decision to expand the campaign in Gaza to capture the strip was approved by the Israeli Security Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, last month. Currently, Israel controls about 75% of the Gaza Strip.
However, at the last meeting of the security cabinet, there were sharp disputes between Netanyahu and his ministers, who want to accelerate the offensive on Gaza City, and Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir, who called on politicians to reach a ceasefire agreement.
"According to four ministers and two military officials who attended the meeting, Zamir said that this campaign would endanger the hostages and increase the burden on an already overstretched army," the material says.
On August 20, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched an offensive on Gaza City. In preparation for the capture operation, the IDF called up 60,000 troops from the reserve and extended the service life of 20,000 reservists. The operation was called "Gideon's Chariots – 2".
Al Mayadeen journalist Mahmoud Alawadia told Izvestia on August 24 that the Jabalia al-Nazla area was under intense Israeli artillery fire. According to him, residents have to leave their homes en masse, fleeing from shelling and attacks by the IDF. The territory adjacent to Jabalia al-Nazla district is classified as a "red zone".
On August 29, the IDF declared Gaza City a dangerous war zone and lifted a local tactical cease-fire. The IDF stressed that it would continue to support "humanitarian efforts" and conduct offensive military operations to protect Israel.
All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
