Slovakia will vote against the European Commission's adoption of a plan to phase out fossil fuels from Russia by 2027. This was announced on September 2 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in China.

"You probably know the decision of the European Commission regarding the "repowering", that is, the complete shutdown of gas and oil transportation [from Russia] from 2027. We will vote against this decision in the EU. I am sure that a lot can change before January 1, 2028, and that "repowering" will not work because it causes great harm," Fico said.

He noted that Slovakia wants to continue cooperating with Russia in the energy sector and is interested in gas and oil supplies from Russia.

During the meeting with Putin, Fico said that he intends to discuss at talks with President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky the inadmissibility of attacks on the energy sector by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to the head of government, Slovakia reacts very harshly to the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacks on oil pipelines.

The Prime Minister of Slovakia also expressed his interest in standardizing relations with Russia. He expressed his intention to continue cooperation with Moscow, including in the field of caring for military graves, and noted that Slovakia treats monuments and military cemeteries with great respect.
