The Interior Ministry named five rules for protection against fraud

On September 2, the Department for the Organization of the Fight against the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia told about the schemes used by fraudsters to capture the victim's attention, as well as ways to protect themselves.

"Attention is what all deception schemes are aimed at. It determines how easy it is to turn off critical thinking and force you to act on emotions," the department's Telegram channel says.

They noted that scammers capture attention in various ways, for example, they appeal to emotions (fear, greed, trust) or use the technique of "artificial urgency" — they declare the need for a quick financial transaction in order not to give the interlocutor time to think. In addition, attackers use complex structures and provide the victim with a large flow of information so that the person does not have time to process the information and becomes more suggestible.

To protect yourself from fraudulent schemes, the Interior Ministry advised interrupting the conversation, using the "pause rule" and "train your eyesight" by studying deception schemes.

"No phone calls from SMS. Only official contacts on the website. <...> Use technology. Enable anti-fraud services, activate two-factor authentication, and update applications. The technical shield does not replace common sense, but strengthens it," the agency concluded.

The day before, the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that hacking accounts in messengers and social networks remains a popular method of fraud, when attackers gain access to user pages and use them to send messages for the purpose of deception. The agency noted that signs of account hacking include "strange" requests, for example, "Urgently transfer money" or "Help me out, I'm in trouble," as well as an unusual communication style for the interlocutor.
