British Foreign Minister Devil Lammy confirmed London's plans to recognize Palestine
Foreign Minister David Lammy said that Britain still intends to recognize the statehood of Palestine in September, as Israel has not fulfilled the demands of the British government to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip. This was reported on September 1 by The Guardian newspaper.
"To those who say that recognition [of Palestine] is a reward for Hamas or a threat to Israel's security, I will say this: recognition is embedded in the principle of a two-State solution [to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict], which Hamas rejects. We have made it clear that any Palestinian state must be demilitarized," Lammy said.
The Foreign Minister added that all factors related to the recognition of Palestine will be considered, which is currently scheduled for the second half of September.
Earlier, on July 29, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he would recognize the statehood of Palestine in September on the eve of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Starmer promised to evaluate the steps taken by Israel and Hamas to end the conflict before making a final decision.
