- The European Council recognized the mention of Ukraine in the terms of the US-EU trade deal
Ensuring Ukraine's security was part of the trade agreement between the United States and the European Union (EU). This was announced on September 1 by the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, whose words are quoted on the website of the European Council.
"Stabilizing transatlantic relations and ensuring U.S. involvement in ensuring Ukraine's security have been our top priority," he said at the opening of the strategic forum in Slovenia.
At the same time, the Politico newspaper clarified that this is a "serious departure" from the official position of the EU, according to which there is "no connection" between the United States' plans for Ukraine and the agreement on duties.
"Costa seems to have acknowledged that the conflict in Ukraine was one of the factors that influenced the EU's acceptance of its much—criticized trade deal with the United States, which is a major departure from the official line taken by the EU executive," the publication said.
Earlier in the day, Costa also said that the EU did not enter into a trade war with the United States, as it considers it an "imprudent risk", preferring to maintain diplomatic relations with an ally. He stressed that Brussels had chosen "diplomacy instead of escalation."
The United States and the European Union agreed on a trade deal on July 27. The agreement will allow the EU to avoid 30% duties that could be imposed by Washington. As a result of the deal, the European Union remains with tariffs of 15% on most of its exports, including cars. US President Donald Trump stressed that such an agreement "satisfies both sides."
