- The head of the European Council called the entry into a trade war with the United States a risk for the EU
The European Union (EU) did not enter into a trade war with the United States, as it considers it an "imprudent risk", preferring to maintain diplomatic relations with an ally. This was announced on September 1 by the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, at the opening of the strategic forum in Slovenia. His words are quoted on the website of the European Council.
"We certainly do not welcome the return of duties or restrictions on an unbalanced trading system. But we have to be honest about the bigger picture. In today's interconnected world, trade, diplomacy, and security inevitably influence each other. <...> Escalating tensions with a key ally over tariffs <...> would be an unwise risk," he said.
Costa stressed that Brussels had chosen "diplomacy instead of escalation."
"The European Union did not start a trade war. But yes, we refrain from retaliatory actions, protecting our own interests. Our partners, including the United States, should know that the European Union will always defend its sovereignty, its citizens, its companies and its values," Costa said.
At the same time, the head of the European Council called for greater autonomy and stability of the bloc, saying that the EU "can no longer rely solely on allies."
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, noted on August 24 that the trade deal between the United States and the EU is not without flaws, but it is strong. She clarified that the main objective of the agreement is to avoid an escalation of US—European relations during a period of international turbulence.
The United States and the European Union agreed on a trade deal on July 27. The agreement will allow the EU to avoid 30% duties that could be imposed by Washington. As a result of the deal, the European Union remains with 15% tariffs on most of its exports, including cars. US President Donald Trump stressed that such an agreement "satisfies both sides."
