- Overchuk pointed out the importance of Armenia's independent decision to withdraw from the EAEU
The issue of Armenia's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in order to obtain membership in the European Union (EU) should be decided exclusively by the people of Armenia, but all circumstances must be taken into account. This was announced on September 1 by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk.
"Recently (the Prime Minister of Armenia. Nikol Pashinyan said that it is impossible to be a member of the EAEU and the EU at the same time. And if such a decision is ever made, I am sure that various factors influencing decision-making in one direction or another will be weighed," the deputy head of the Russian government told reporters, as quoted by Interfax.
On June 30, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced that Armenia and the EU had started discussing cooperation in the field of security and defense. According to him, it will be aimed at strengthening the stability of the state and further developing democratic institutions.
On the same day, Armenian political analyst Arman Abovyan told Izvestia that the EU would not be able to provide protection to Armenia, despite constant promises of security, as Europe itself has big problems in this area.
On August 28, Pashinyan announced that Armenia cannot simultaneously be a member of the EU and the EAEU. According to him, when the time comes for the final choice, the Armenian government will make an appropriate decision.
