Excessive sweating can be a symptom of serious cardiovascular diseases. Vyacheslav Koliev, PhD, cardiologist, Chief physician of the 1st clinical department of JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), shared this with Izvestia on September 2.

Hyperhidrosis, especially occurring at rest or accompanied by other alarming signs, may indicate coronary heart disease (CHD). Although this symptom is not the main one for diagnosis and is in the 12th place in terms of importance in severe forms of coronary heart disease, it is important to know about it.

"Sweating is a natural mechanism of thermoregulation, but its excess can be caused by both physiological causes (heat, exercise, stress) and pathological conditions, including endocrine disorders, infections or oncological processes," the specialist noted.

In coronary heart disease, lack of oxygen in the heart muscle activates the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to reflexive profuse sweating. It is often cold, sticky, and occurs for no apparent reason, unlike a normal reaction to heat or exertion.

The key difference between sweating in coronary heart disease and normal sweating is the conditions of occurrence and associated symptoms. With cardiac disorders, sweating may occur at rest or at night, accompanied by chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and anxiety. In the elderly, diabetic patients, or women, symptoms may be atypical, and sweating is sometimes the only sign of a problem.

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to the progression of coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, or sudden cardiac death. If you experience excessive sweating for no reason in combination with other alarming signs, you should immediately consult a cardiologist. Diagnosis may include an ECG, echocardiography, daily ECG monitoring, and coronary angiography. Early detection of the problem allows you to prescribe effective treatment and improve the prognosis.

Earlier, on August 5, Ella Vinogradova, a cardiologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, spoke about signs of heart failure during exercise. The specialist explained that with heart failure, the heart cannot cope with ensuring adequate blood flow. Among the most common causes are coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension, heart defects, previous myocardial infarction, myocarditis, pericarditis, as well as the effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
