Polish President Karol Nawrocki, during a speech on the Westerplatte peninsula near Gdansk, demanded reparations from Germany in order to build a fair partnership between the countries. This was reported on September 1 by RMF24 radio station.

"In order to build a partnership based on the principles of truth and good relations, we must resolve the issue of reparations from the German state, which I, as President of Poland, unconditionally demand for the common good. Reparations will not be an alternative to historical amnesia, but Poland, as a state on the front line, as the most important country on the eastern flank of NATO, needs justice, truth and clear relations with Germany, but it also needs reparations from the German state," said Navrotsky.

It is specified that at 4:45 a.m. (5:45 Moscow time) on the Westerplatte near Gdansk, solemn events dedicated to the 86th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II began with the sounds of an air raid. On September 1, 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Westerplatte.

In addition to the Polish President, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Speaker of the Sejm Shimon Holownia, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh took part in the commemorative events.

Last August, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski named a condition under which reparations could be waived. The politician suggested that the German side take a visible step towards the joint future of the two states in the form of investments in the Polish Ministry of Defense.

On May 8, 2025, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the issue of reparations to Poland for the crimes of the National Socialists during World War II was legally closed in the German government. He noted that in order to maintain the security of the entire European Union, its member countries simply need to be together.
