- The Iranian President proposed to establish a committee of foreign ministers in the SCO in case of a crisis
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced an initiative to form a committee of foreign ministers of the organization's member countries. The purpose of the committee is to resolve crises that endanger peace and security in the Middle East. He mentioned this on September 1 during the summit.
"In the field of peace-building, it is necessary to form a committee consisting of the foreign ministers of the member countries, and in the event of various crises threatening regional peace and security, to exchange views and hold consultations, develop operational proposals for crisis resolution and present a follow—up mechanism," the Iranian president's official website quoted him as saying.
Peseshkian believes that the committee should be able to respond promptly to crisis situations, meeting at the request of any member. Its task is to act as an "intellectual and operational lever", providing comprehensive assistance to members whose independence has been violated.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, responding to a question from a correspondent of Izvestia on August 15, said that Iran highly appreciates the SCO for its support in connection with the conflict with Israel. According to him, this organization is very important and the Iranian side attaches great importance to it.
