A flash mob in support of the opening of state borders with the Russian Federation on the night of September 1 will be held in the Finnish city of Lappeenranta — the action will last 18 hours. This was announced on September 1 by Ivan Devyatkin, deputy of the City Council of Lappeenranta.

According to him, quoted by RIA Novosti, people will symbolically line up as a sign of support for those who cannot stand in line at the Narva checkpoint in Estonia in order to enter Russia after the border is closed at the initiative of the Finnish authorities.

It is assumed that this will show that trips from Finland to Russia through countries such as Estonia, Norway or Turkey are not accessible to many, because those who wish have to wait their turn to leave the country for 18 hours.

People taking part in the flash mob will sign a petition to the Lappeenranta City Council with a proposal to contact the state authorities and consider opening the Nuyamaa border crossing (Multi-vehicle Checkpoint "Lingonberry").

On August 21, Iltalehti newspaper reported on the plans of the Finnish authorities to erect fences at the "closest possible" distance from the border with the Russian Federation, which will be equipped with cameras, sensors and loudspeakers.

On April 16, the Finnish government decided to keep the border with Russia closed until further notice. The new resolution, as specified, replaced a similar decision dated April 4, 2024.
