A case has been opened in the Nizhny Novgorod region after the death of five people from alcohol.

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, five residents of the city of Balakhny were poisoned by surrogate alcohol, and a criminal case was opened. This was reported on August 31 by the SU of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia for the region.

On the night of August 30-31, three men and a woman with signs of poisoning with counterfeit alcoholic beverages were taken to a medical facility in the city.

"Despite the medical care provided, [they] died. Another man died in an apartment building on Chapaev Street in Balakhny, Nizhny Novgorod region," the Telegram channel says.

A criminal case is being investigated under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Sale of products that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more persons by negligence"). All the circumstances of the incident are being established, as well as the type of alcohol consumed and its manufacturer. Witnesses are being interviewed, and forensic medical examinations have been scheduled.

A source from Izvestia reported earlier on August 31 that five people died of poisoning in the town of Balakhna, Nizhny Novgorod region. According to him, all the victims were taken from Chapaev Street, 8. Their identities have not yet been established.

Earlier, on August 14, three men died in the Leningrad region after drinking counterfeit alcohol. A woman was also injured and taken to the intensive care unit. It was clarified that alcoholic beverages were made from a non-freezing liquid used exclusively for domestic purposes. A criminal case has been opened.
