The doctor told about the invincible diseases for mankind
Although vaccination has helped eradicate some diseases, many others still pose a serious threat to human health. Marina Kondratenko, a general practitioner and cardiologist at the IMMA clinic network, told Izvestia about this on August 30.
"Many diseases are currently manageable. <...> Through vaccination <...> the majority of people are immune to infection," the expert said.
However, as Kondratenko notes, some infections remain a challenge. Hepatitis B, for example, is manageable due to the availability of an effective vaccine. In the case of hepatitis C, despite the lack of a vaccine, significant progress has been made in treatment to achieve a complete cure for many of its forms. A vaccine has not yet been developed for HIV infection, Kondratenko noted.
"This is due to certain technical difficulties and, of course, scientific work is underway in this direction, because it is believed to be a slow invisible killer. I would like this infection to become manageable, too," the doctor summed up.
The doctor also reminded about congenital genetic diseases. For example, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is treated using viral vectors that deliver modified genes. Despite the promise of this method, the only available therapy (the Zousingma vaccine) is extremely expensive, which makes SMA incurable for most.
On August 30, the Russian Medical Journal provided statistics on the mortality of children with primary immunodeficiency. According to scientists, severe forms of the disease in most cases lead to death in the first two years of a child's life.
