Germany can no longer afford to live the same way as before and pay the same benefits. The country will have to cut them in order to preserve the country's industrial potential. This was announced on August 30 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"We have been living beyond our means for many years. It can't stay like this anymore. We have become an industrial museum. If we want to fix this, we need to tackle social security systems. This will mean painful decisions. This will mean cuts," the Bild newspaper quotes Merz as saying.

He added that the system of benefits payments cannot remain the same, as there are hundreds of thousands of vacancies in the country that employers cannot close, despite the number of unemployed. According to Bild, it has exceeded the mark of 3 million people. Merz stressed that the responsibility for this lies with people who unscrupulously exploit the social security benefits system.

Merz said on August 24 that Germany could no longer afford the existing welfare system. According to him, spending on social programs is "out of control" and endangers the sustainability of the budget. The Chancellor also stated that he intends to continue the course of reducing migration and creating a "business-friendly" policy.
