- Politico reported on Hungary's plans to veto the training of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers in Europe
The Hungarian authorities are considering the possibility of vetoing the initiatives of the European Union (EU) countries to organize military exercises on the territory of Ukraine after the possible end of the current conflict, Politico writes on August 29.
A media source said that thanks to the European assistance mission to Ukraine, specialists from 23 EU countries, as well as Norway and Canada, have already trained about 80,000 military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). In order to continue the mission directly on the territory of Ukraine, it is necessary to amend the relevant mandate.
This requires the support of amendments from all 27 EU member states. In this case, Hungary, which holds a pro-Russian position, can use the right of veto and block the initiative. The head of the bloc's diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said after an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Copenhagen on Friday that most EU countries are open to training Ukrainian military personnel in Ukraine after the end of the conflict.
"I welcome the broad support that the idea of expanding the mandate [of the EU military assistance mission to Ukraine] has received today to provide training and consultations on the territory of Ukraine after the truce," she told reporters.
Callas also stated earlier on August 29 that the EU's guarantee of security for Ukraine is the contribution of countries to the training and military mission and support for the country's military-industrial complexes (MIC). She clarified that the EU would consider options for "changing the mandate of existing missions" to continue the militarization of the Ukrainian side in the event of a peaceful settlement. In addition, Kallas urged to think about the upcoming arms supplies to Kiev.
The Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on August 28 that the leaders of Italy's ruling coalition intend to discuss sending their sappers to mine Ukrainian territories and offshore areas in order to restore their security. It is noted that this issue cannot be resolved quickly, any action by Italy will be possible only if a truce is established.
