- The French historian pointed to the decline of the German economy due to militarization and sanctions
The German government is committed to militarization, despite the negative impact on the country's economy. This was stated on August 29 in an interview with Izvestia by French historian, writer, former Director General of the ESCP European Branch, Eduard Husson.
"If this is indeed the course chosen by the German leadership, then there is a part of the German population that opposes this militarization. <...> Almost 50% of Germans <...> are against it," the expert noted.
According to him, Germany is becoming more and more dependent on the United States. This is due to the fact that production costs have increased by 30% due to the lack of cheap Russian gas in the country. Because of the sanctions against Russia, they lost their markets, and they were occupied by India, China and other countries.
In addition, the German government wants to produce weapons to revitalize German industry. After 1945, Germany made a commitment to no longer participate in military conflicts, and now it is only fueling one of them. The United States wanted Germany to sever ties with Russia, and therefore encouraged Germany to become a military power again.
"But what is more alarming is the mood of the German leadership, because even if they do not have military capabilities at home, they, on the contrary, encourage a militaristic spirit within NATO. Or they support the American party, <...> which opposes the wishes of Mr. [US President Donald] Should Trump put an end to the <conflict> in Ukraine? And that's why <...> it's alarming, because it revives the German militarism of the past," said Husson.

Earlier, on August 26, Germany proposed making military service in the Bundeswehr mandatory not only for men, but also for women.
On August 27, Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (BSW) party, called the draft law on military service a step towards the militarization of Germany. According to her, the initiative is "a serious mistake and an attack on young people, the clear majority of whom oppose the restoration of military service."
