The United States is interested in holding technical consultations between representatives of Russia and Ukraine before a possible trilateral summit on the Ukrainian settlement. This was reported on Friday, August 29, by the newspaper Politico, citing its sources.

To discuss this topic, Special envoy of the President of the United States Stephen Witkoff has scheduled a meeting for Friday in New York with the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Ermak.

"On Friday, he will meet with Ermak in New York as part of efforts to arrange a meeting between Russia and Ukraine for technical talks ahead of a possible trilateral summit," the article says.

One of the newspaper's sources, who holds a senior post in the White House, said that lower-level talks between officials from Moscow and Kiev, if held, would focus on discussing territories, security guarantees and other issues. In addition, such a meeting will lay the foundation for a meeting at a higher level.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on August 20 that Russian President Vladimir Putin was ready to hold talks with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky if all issues requiring discussion at the highest level were well worked out.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified on August 29 that Putin does not rule out the possibility of holding a meeting with Zelensky, but believes that any summit meeting should be well prepared so that it can finalize developments that must first be implemented at the expert level.
