The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is closing. This was announced on August 29 by United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"The transfer of a small set of basic programs to the USAID State Department is officially closed," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to Rubio, since January, the administration of US President Donald Trump has saved taxpayers "tens of billions of dollars." According to the Secretary of State, the agency has "gone off the rails," and now Russell Vaught, director of the Office of Management and Budget of the United States (OMB), will lead its liquidation.

On February 3, American billionaire and businessman Elon Musk announced the launch of the USAID liquidation process. According to him, the agency cannot be restored and it needs to be closed. At the same time, Trump called the agency's leaders radical lunatics. Later, on March 10, Rubio announced that Washington was officially closing 83% of USAID programs. According to him, tens of billions of dollars were spent in ways that do not meet the basic national interests of the United States within the framework of 5,200 canceled contracts.

On July 1, the US Secretary of State announced that USAID had officially stopped providing foreign aid. The relevant programs have been transferred to the jurisdiction of the US Department of State.
