- The State Duma assessed the EC's plans to transfer billions of euros from Russian assets to Kiev
Svetlana Zhurova, deputy chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, called the possible transfer of funds from Russian frozen assets to Ukraine by the European Commission (EC) a theft.
"Squandering other people's money seems to be a modern trend. In my understanding, when this happens, it is a signal to people in other countries who want to transfer funds somewhere that something will happen, and any bank can somehow redistribute your money, review it, and there are no guarantees. Of course, this is theft," Zhurova said in an interview with Lenta.Ru on Friday, August 29th.
According to her, it's one thing when trials take place, something is proved and then money is transferred, but it's quite another when funds are given away without trial, which cannot be called a market story.
Earlier on August 29, it was reported that the European Commission had begun developing a mechanism for transferring almost €200 billion euros from frozen Russian assets to Kiev to rebuild the country after the end of the conflict.
In an interview with Izvestia on August 29, MEP Hans Neuhoff said that the EU had largely exhausted the possibilities of sanctions pressure on Russia.
On August 28, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU plans to strengthen the sanctions regime against Russia and will soon introduce the 19th package of "new tough" restrictions. She also noted that Brussels continues to work with frozen Russian assets to direct them to the restoration of Ukraine.
On August 17, von der Leyen announced that the 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia would be ready in early September. According to her, the EU has already begun preparations for new restrictions. The diplomat added that Europe will continue to exert economic pressure on Russia, as well as tighten restrictions.
