- Degtyarev reported on the work of the Russian Federation on the admission of athletes to tournaments
Russia is working on the return of domestic athletes to the international arena, but it is not worth getting ahead of events yet. This was announced on August 29 by Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation and President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), at the Basketball Development Council during the plenary session "Basketball 2030: from regional Projects to national Victories."
"We work quietly, non-publicly, at the level of all international organizations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC). I hold a lot of meetings and negotiations. The ice has broken, but we will not get ahead of events," Degtyarev said, quoted by TASS.
As noted by "Gazeta.Ru", in 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to the sports federations and recommended that Russian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.
At the end of 2023, the organization decided to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games as neutral athletes. But at the same time, they had to fulfill a number of requirements and qualify.
Earlier, on June 26, IOC President Kirsty Coventry said that a decision on the admission of Russians as neutral athletes to the 2026 Olympic Games could be taken at a meeting of the IOC Executive Committee in September.
On June 11, IOC Athletic Director Keith McConnell called for work on allowing Russians to participate in tournaments. He expressed gratitude to those who allowed neutral athletes with Belarusian and Russian passports to participate in the competition.
