For the spread of chikungunya fever in Russia, it is necessary not only to have infected mosquitoes carrying the virus, but also certain temperature conditions. On August 29, Sergey Voznesensky, Candidate of Medical Sciences, infectious diseases physician, told Izvestia about this.

"We need not only the presence of a patient and the presence of a mosquito, but also temperature conditions. In order for the virus to spread in the mosquito's body and be transmitted further, the average daily temperature must be above +25 degrees for at least 10 days," he explained.

The doctor added that the probability of fever spreading in the Russian Federation tends to zero. He stressed that the carriers of the virus are Aedes mosquitoes, which live in tropical and subtropical zones. According to Voznesensky, severe cases of this disease are extremely rare, and fatal cases are even rarer — usually in people with chronic diseases or immune problems.

Among the symptoms of chikungunya fever are severe joint pain that can persist for several weeks, fever, intoxication, headache and rash, the infectious disease specialist noted.

Earlier that day, Rospotrebnadzor reported that an imported case of chikungunya fever was first recorded in the Russian Federation, and the patient was hospitalized in a moderate condition. It was clarified that there are no risks of infection spreading in the country, since fever is transmitted through insect bites, and not from person to person. In addition, the number of mosquitoes carrying the infection in Russia is not dangerous.
