In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Saturday, August 30, and which church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for August 30, 2025

In Russia, Mironov Day was celebrated on August 30. From this period, preparations for the autumn season began. The peasants were in a hurry to finish their field work, especially the sowing of winter crops. There was a popular belief that if you did not manage to do this, then the future harvest would be scarce.

In the morning, the men went to the field, and the women did household chores — salted mushrooms, dried berries, and chores around the house. During the holiday, they tried to bring careful order to the house. They also collected old things and then burned them along with the garbage. It was believed that in this way you can get rid of accumulated negative energy and diseases.

Great importance was attached to weather signs. They were used to judge the upcoming autumn. If the cranes had already flown south on Myron, they knew that the cold weather was just around the corner, and closer to the Intercession (the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on October 14), the first frosts would come.

Other signs of the day:

  • the sky was covered with dense clouds, leading to prolonged rains and slush;
  • morning dew or fog are harbingers of good weather;
  • the sun goes into the clouds — to inclement weather;
  • A red sunrise heralds strong winds;
  • the dawn turned golden—for warmth.
  • clear and sunny weather leads to an early and warm spring.
  • hoarfrost promises a bountiful harvest next year;
  • Dreams that occur on the eve of the holiday are prophetic, and they can be used to determine future events.

What not to do on August 30th

In the old days, Mironov Day was often called Widow's Day. On this day, it was customary to help widows, orphans and all the destitute. It was impossible to refuse help. Otherwise, as the people believed, he would soon be in need. There are also a number of other prohibitions associated with the holiday, which were strictly followed in order not to incur troubles and misfortunes.

What else can't be done on August 30th:

  • Visiting the cemetery is believed to be the time when the souls of the dead "visit" each other, and it is better for the living not to disturb their peace.;
  • quarreling and figuring things out will lead to long, exhausting conflicts.;
  • to talk about your plans — they will not come true;
  • Spending a lot of time in bed can lead to financial problems.;
  • guessing and summoning spirits can change fate for the worse or attract the attention of evil spirits.;
  • look in the mirror for a long time, otherwise otherworldly forces will "steal" beauty;
  • to plan a wedding on this day, the marriage will be unsuccessful.

What is the church holiday on August 30th?

On August 30, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Myron of Cyzicus, who lived in the ancient Greek city of Achaia in the third century. He was a priest of the local church during the reign of Emperor Decius, during which Christians were persecuted. One day, during the Christmas service, soldiers broke into the church and accused the believers of heresy, forcing them to worship pagan gods.

Myron stood up for the audience, for which he was subjected to severe torture. First, he was thrown to wild animals, and then they tried to burn him in a fire. But the priest miraculously remained unharmed. As a result, the soldiers beheaded him. The body of the martyr was secretly buried by his companions.

On the same date, believers remember one of the first Russian icon painters, St. Alypius of the Caves, who lived at the turn of the XI—XII centuries. The saint practiced asceticism at the Kiev Caves Monastery from a young age, and studied icon painting from Greek masters. Many of the images he painted became famous for their miracle-working.

Prayers on August 30th

On the Memorial Day of Myron of Kizichy, they read the kontakion of the feast and pray for protection from diseases and temptations, strengthening in faith, and help in cases when they do not know what to do or cannot find their way in life. They pray to Alypius of the Caves for strengthening in faith and protection from earthly temptations. Many icon painters also turn to the monk, asking for help in their work and inspiration.

Amen to that."
