Zakharova supports Trump's matchmaker over rising anti-Semitism in France
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Thursday, August 28, in an interview with Izvestia, supported the concerns of US Ambassador to France Charles Kushner (father of US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner) about the growth of anti-Semitism in France.
Earlier, Kushner, in a letter to French leader Emmanuel Macron, expressed "deep concern about the surge of anti-Semitism in France and the lack of sufficient measures by the government to combat it."
"Charles Kushner has every moral right to raise this issue as a descendant of Belarusian Jewish Holocaust survivors, members of the Belsky Brothers partisan unit," Zakharova said.
After that, the ambassador was summoned to the French Foreign Ministry, where he was reminded of the "duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of states."
"It is strange to read and listen about interference in internal affairs, because the topic of human rights should be, as official Paris has been convincing us for many years, of a cross—border nature," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on August 20 that Macron's intention to recognize the state of Palestine incites anti-Semitic sentiments, rewards the terror of the Palestinian Hamas movement and toughens the movement's refusal to release hostages. The French president said that the country protects fellow Jews, despite the intention to recognize the sovereignty of Palestine.
Macron said on August 26 that Netanyahu had insulted the whole of France by accusing official Paris of inciting anti-Semitism. The French leader also invited the head of the Israeli government "as a friend" to start working together with other international partners to achieve peace.
