The Greek court ruled on the extradition of Plahotniuc to Moldova
The Athens court has decided to extradite the former leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova and businessman Vladimir Plahotniuc to Moldova. This was announced on August 28 by the lawyer of the detained politician Lucian Rogak.
"The judges of the Athens Court of Appeal ruled in favor of the extradition of Plahotniuc. Next, the Ministries of Justice of Greece and Moldova will deal with the technical and logistical procedures that are provided for in such cases," Rogak said on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
According to the lawyer, after Plahotniuc returns to Moldova, he intends to actively defend himself and justify himself in cases brought against him.
In Moldova, Plahotniuc is accused of money laundering, fraud and illegal enrichment, as well as of withdrawing $1 billion from the country's banking system. The court in Chisinau has issued a warrant for his arrest in absentia several times, and the Moldovan prosecutor's office insists on the oligarch's extradition to his homeland. In addition, in November 2017, the Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested Plahotniuc in absentia and put him on the international wanted list for attempted murder. He is also suspected of withdrawing large funds from Russian banks together with Moldovan politician Renato Usatii.
On July 22, the businessman was detained in Greece. On July 26, a criminal case was opened in Romania against Vladimir Plahotniuc upon the discovery of forged documents. Forgery of two identity cards, two driver's licenses and one passport of the person involved with distortion of data about the identity of the owner was revealed. On July 28, the defendant's lawyer announced Plahotniuc's readiness to be extradited to Moldova.
