Summer is not the only time of the year when you need to wear sunscreens. Ekaterina Konstantinovskaya, a dermatocosmetologist, told Izvestia on August 29 about why sunscreen is needed not only in the heat, how to read the icons on the package and what filters are available.

"The main purpose of SPF is to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation, which accelerates aging and increases the risk of cancer. The sun emits three types of ultraviolet radiation: UVA, UVB and UVC, but the first two reach the earth's surface. UVA is responsible for photoaging and pigmentation, while UVB is responsible for burns and mutations in cells," she pointed out.

However, it is not necessary to use sunscreens "just in case" every day. According to Konstantinovskaya, according to WHO, the constant use of SPF is required at a UV index level of 3 or higher. In the Middle zone of Russia, this indicator is lower for most of the year, so residents whose day passes along the route "home — metro — office" do not need to load their skin with unnecessary products. Another thing is walking, trips to nature, or relaxing by the water, where protection is mandatory.

The numbers on the package, such as SPF 30 or 50, indicate the degree of protection. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks about 98%, the difference is minimal, so the choice depends on the skin type and the situation. All sunscreen filters are divided into two types: physical and chemical. Physical or mineral materials contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and act as a screen, reflecting and scattering ultraviolet light. They are hypoallergenic and suitable even for children, but they can leave a whitish trail. Chemical filters such as octocrylene or avobenzone absorb radiation and convert it into heat. They are lighter in texture, but they can cause irritation in sensitive people.

"The correct application of the product is just as important as its choice. The cream should be distributed 15-20 minutes before going out in the sun, and renewed every two hours and after contact with water. Keep the tube in the shade, avoiding direct sunlight. You can wash off the sunscreen with a regular mild cleanser gel or micellar water, without complicating the care with aggressive products," the doctor added.

No SPF provides complete UV protection, so to maintain skin health, it is also important to wear long-sleeved clothing, hats, sunglasses, and avoid exposure to the sun during its peak hours.

Earlier, on August 26, Natalia Mikhailova, PhD, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, in an interview with Izvestia, named the main stages of skin care in the autumn period. According to her, most often in autumn the skin suffers from dryness, tightness, irritation, peeling, as well as from hyperpigmentation and inflammation as a result of summer hyperinsolation.
