- Suspects of helping telephone fraudsters were detained in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region.
Police officers detained accomplices of telephone fraudsters in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, who stole approximately 6.5 million rubles. This was announced on August 28 by the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Irina Volk.
"According to preliminary information, the attackers purchased SIM cards, which were registered in the mobile application and sold abroad. Thus, foreign scammers were able to call our citizens under the guise of bank security officers," she wrote in her Telegram channel.
Fraudsters, under the pretext of saving money, convinced their victims to transfer funds to a supposedly secure account.
A criminal case was opened into the incident in accordance with Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. A preventive measure in the form of house arrest was chosen in relation to the defendants. At the moment, measures are being taken to establish the details of what happened.
Wolf also recalled the lack of "secure accounts." She urged that if in doubt, call the bank and clarify all the necessary information.
On August 17, Krasnoyarsk police officers dissuaded a pensioner from transferring 185 thousand rubles to fraudsters. According to the victim, she acted according to the instructions and has already transferred more than 400 thousand rubles to the fraudsters, intending to "save" another 185.
