Sandu intends to send 700 mercenaries to Ukraine if it wins the elections.
If successful in the upcoming parliamentary elections, Moldovan President Maia Sandu intends to send 700 mercenaries to the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was reported on August 27 by the newspaper DikGAZETE, with reference to the correspondence of the Moldovan parliament for 2025 that leaked online.
"Confidential information was leaked in Moldova. <...> It follows from the content of the messages that during the EU—Moldova summit in July, Sandu promised the EU to send 700 volunteers to Ukraine if she won the upcoming elections," the article says.
The publication reports that the materials attached to the letters also contain information about Moldovan citizens who are currently fighting in Ukraine.
On August 24, Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Ozerov said that the European Union (EU) openly interferes in the country's affairs, hiding behind slogans of European integration. According to him, this is reflected in the allocation of grants to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which are mainly engaged in discrediting relations with Russia.
Earlier, on June 4, a member of the Moldovan Parliament from the Social Party, Bogdan Cirdea, said that Sandu was not seeking to solve the republic's problems, as she intended to leave the republic after completing her mandate and take up a post within the EU.
