Vladimir Zharikhin, a political scientist and deputy director of the Institute of CIS Countries, assessed on Wednesday, August 27, Ukraine's chances of joining the European Union (EU) after Hungary changed its position on the issue.

Earlier, the Politico newspaper reported that US President Donald Trump convinced Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to soften Budapest's position on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

According to the newspaper, the decision to start negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU may be made in the coming days. 360.ru .

"I really hope that these actions by Trump contribute to Ukraine's early accession to the EU — then the EU will definitely come to an end," the expert said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the political scientist, the games called "Ukraine's accession to the EU" have been going on for decades.

Zharikhin noted that even if Orban was forced to change his mind on this issue, there are certain requirements that the country must fulfill in order to join the EU, and Ukraine does not meet them.

On August 12, Orban refused to join the statement of the EU leaders on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, which indicated Kiev's support on the path to European integration, RT reports. It is noted that in this statement, the leaders of the European states supported Ukraine's efforts towards joining the EU, and also promised to continue financial, economic, military and diplomatic support for Kiev.

The Hungarian Prime Minister later, on August 13, said that the European Union was currently in a difficult situation, so accepting Ukraine could have an even more negative impact on it, as well as lead Hungary on a "path of impoverishment." Orban suggested that if Ukraine becomes part of the EU, Hungary's agriculture could suffer losses and decline. According to him, such a decision by Brussels will also entail the loss of jobs in his country.
