Zsolt Hernadi, CEO of the Hungarian oil company MOL, said that even if Russian oil supplies continue via the alternative Druzhba route, there are concerns that refineries in Hungary and Slovakia will not be able to operate at full capacity, which could lead to a chain reaction in the Central European region. He said this in an interview with the Mandiner portal on August 27.

"Now we can still import Russian oil, but there are two risks. Firstly, it will be much more expensive, and secondly, we may face the problem of incomplete operation of the refinery," Hernadi stressed.

He noted that the Croatian Adria oil pipeline had not passed sufficient tests to handle such volumes of oil.

"If the tests take half a day or one day, we cannot say that it will be able to operate at full capacity all year," the head of the company added, specifying that the test results were contradictory.

According to Hernadi, if the refineries in Hungary and Slovakia are unable to operate at full capacity or fail, this will have an impact on the whole of Central Europe and cause a chain reaction in the region.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on August 22 that the Druzhba oil pipeline, through which Russian oil flows to Hungary and Slovakia, was again attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. As a result of the incident, oil supplies to Hungary were suspended. According to Szijjarto, they will resume in five days.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on August 26 that he was unable to understand the purpose of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' attacks on the country's oil infrastructure. He described the Ukrainian Armed Forces' strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline as "bad intentions." In turn, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview with Izvestia, called the attack pure banditry. She stressed that in international law such activities are classified as terrorist.
