Agronomist and biologist Mikhail Vorobyov told whether it is necessary to prune plants in the garden for winter.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Wednesday, August 27, he recalled that pruning of trees and shrubs is carried out either after leaf fall or in spring before budding.

It is dangerous to do this in late autumn: after pruning, the tree may suffer from icy rain or stuck snow, which causes branches to break and the plant may be left with only one stump.

In Moscow and the region, pruning is traditionally carried out in the spring, the only exception is raspberries — its branches can be pruned in the fall, and it is better to tie up young shoots so that they are not broken by snow. It is important to take into account the varietal characteristics of raspberries and blackberries, as there are more capricious species among them.

Biologists also recommend using the collected leaves to insulate the soil: they are harvested in the spring, after the roots have successfully overwintered. In addition, it is recommended to fertilize trees with organic materials before winter.
