The ultimate goal of the crisis settlement process in Ukraine should be to establish long-term peace, so both sides should start a friendly dialogue. This was announced on August 27 by Ronald Lamola, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa (RSA), at a briefing for journalists at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"South Africa sees a lasting and long-term peace as the ultimate goal of resolving the situation in Ukraine. Of course, the reality now is that the path to peace is difficult. However, the parties need to cooperate. <...> Of course, compromises will be required from the parties, this is the reality. We continue to participate in the process of searching for a peaceful solution," TASS quoted him as saying.

Lamola noted that the South African authorities have always sought to ensure that the parties to the conflict find a solution at the negotiating table and rely on the foundations of the Charter of the United Nations (UN) for this. Also, now the republic is very pleased with the peacekeeping efforts of the United States.

"We are glad that even the United States now sees how to resolve this conflict, when both sides must sit down at the negotiating table in order to find each other within the framework of the proposed roadmap and reach a certain agreement," the minister added.

Earlier, on August 24, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa held talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. In his opinion, in order to confirm the serious intentions of the parties to cease hostilities, it is necessary to hold bilateral and trilateral meetings between Russia, Ukraine and the United States.
