Persistent and unpleasant breath is a problem faced by millions of people around the world. Olga Chepurkova, Professor, MD, speaker of REVIXAN, told Izvestia that the main reason is bacterial plaque forming on the teeth, tongue and gums.

According to the expert, certain types of microorganisms, the so-called periodontopathogens, secrete sulfur-containing compounds that give breathing a characteristic unpleasant tint.

"Brushing your teeth twice a day for 2-3 minutes is a healthy habit, but it's often not enough. Optimal care should include 20-30 minutes a day, including interdental hygiene and tongue cleansing, where many bacteria accumulate in the folds," the doctor noted.

In addition to poor hygiene, an unpleasant odor can provoke inflammatory gum diseases, dryness of the mucous membrane (xerostomia) and, less often, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. With dry mouth, conditions are created for the active reproduction of fungi of the genus Candida, and a decrease in the production of secretory immunoglobulin weakens natural defenses.

"Chewing gum should not be chewed for more than 10-15 minutes or more than three times a day — this can disrupt the balance of stomach acidity. Fragrance sprays mask the odor only for a short time, and moisturizing options can only help with dryness of the mucous membrane," the expert said.

In addition, if the unpleasant odor reappears a few weeks after professional cleaning, it indicates that the underlying problem has not been resolved. The condition cannot remain in a "stable" position: it's either getting better or getting worse. Therefore, it is important to regularly sanitize the oral cavity and, if necessary, use controlled cleaning using special tablets or solutions to determine plaque. This procedure, performed several times a week, helps to develop the habit of thoroughly cleaning hard-to-reach areas.

The doctor emphasized that microcirculation in the gum and periodontal tissues is a key aspect. When it is violated, the vessels narrow, the blood supply deteriorates, and the balance of microflora shifts towards pathogenic bacteria. Mechanical cleaning and antibacterial drugs effectively remove plaque, but do not affect blood flow. In such cases, according to the specialist, photodynamic therapy (PDT) can provide an additional effect: it not only destroys pathogenic microorganisms, but also activates microcirculation, promoting tissue healing and preventing re-inflammation.

PDT is based on an active compound and light with a wavelength of 660 nm. Photoinitiators accumulate on pathogenic microorganisms, and when irradiated, they trigger a photochemical reaction that selectively destroys them. Additionally, the method reduces inflammation, normalizes the microflora and reduces dryness of the mucous membrane.

"Regular use of a toothbrush and floss, cleansing of the tongue, the use of an irrigator and, if necessary, physiotherapy methods is an integrated approach that helps restore freshness and confidence to breathing," concluded Chepurkova.

On August 4, dentist, maxillofacial surgeon Veronika Melekhova spoke about the dangers of fillings from marketplaces for dental treatment. When a person tries to put a seal on himself, he does not pay attention either to the tooth disease or to proper disinfection. In this regard, the tooth will continue to deteriorate, and further treatment will cost the potential patient more.
