- Bloomberg announced the intention of the United States to receive $ 15 billion from drug lord El Mayo
The United States intends to receive from the Mexican drug lord, co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel, Ismael Sambad Garcia, known as "El Mayo," $15 billion, which he received for drug trafficking since the 1980s and "agreed to give back." This was reported by Bloomberg on August 26.
"The $15 billion figure was calculated based on an estimate of the cartel's profits obtained during the previous trial of El Chapo Guzman, the co-leader of the Sinaloa cartel, and then taking into account the additional time during which Sambad Garcia managed the organization after Guzman's arrest," the material says.
It clarifies that the confiscation order "gives American prosecutors the opportunity to demonstrate their tough stance in the fight against crime."
On July 3, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested former WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on suspicion of possible ties to the cartel. In 2024, the boxer applied for permanent residence, referring to his marriage to an American citizen who had previously been in a relationship with one of the sons of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, which strained federal agencies. On August 20, Chavez Jr. was deported from the United States to Mexico.
