Russian swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov, while swimming in the Bosphorus Strait, deviated from the finish line, changing direction in the other direction. This was announced on August 27 by Turkish amateur swimmer Hayati Shamiloglu.

"I thought it was a lost swimmer. <...> He swam purposefully, knowing his goal. He didn't look so confused," the Milliyet newspaper quoted him as saying.
